On the 5th July 1948, the NHS was launched in the United Kingdom by Aneurin Bevan, Minister of Health. The 5th July 2020 marked 72 years since the NHS and social care system was established in the United Kingdom.

 

To mark this fantastic anniversary, Dr Bahijja Raimi-Abraham interviewed Dr Dereck Gondongwe (see his biography below) about his work within the NHS as a pharmacist and his experience working within the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biography - Dr Dereck Gondongwe

​

After obtaining a Master of Pharmacy degree from the University of East Anglia School of Pharmacy, Dr Gondongwe joined Guys and St Thomas' NHS Trust (GSTT) for pre-registration training. He moved to the University College London Hospitals (UCLH) as a junior pharmacist undertaking a Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice.

 

In 2010, he started reading for a Doctor of Philosophy at University College London School of Pharmacy under the supervision of Professors Duncan Craig and Susan Barker. In 2015, he published his thesis "An evaluation of an electronic tongue for the taste assessment of drugs and pharmaceutical formulations" and returned to clinical practice at UCLH as Critical Care Pharmacist. He has since held several positions in the organisation as is currently the lead pharmacist for education and senior critical care pharmacist.

 

Dr Dereck Gondongwe is a prescribing pharmacist with a focus on acute pain management in the peri-operative period. This is also he's area of research. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Gondongwe led the pharmacy critical care team response to critical care expansion project.

 

Dr Gondongwe is currently coordinating the UCLH pharmacy critical care teams' recovery from and further preparedness for COVID-19 plans.
