All episodes in the month of September will be dedicated to conversations about dementia. The aim of the series is to raise awareness of dementia and experiences of it across the world.

The third episode in our Dementia series is a discussion with Professor Adesola Ogunniyi a Clinician, Neurologist, Neuroepidemiologist and holding professional faculty position at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. They discuss dementia and Alzheimer's Disease more specifically challenges which Nigerian families dealing with dementia are facedd with.

Biography - Professor Adesola Ogunniyi

​

Professor Adesola Ogunniyi is a Clinician, Neurologist and Neuroepidemiologist holding a professorial faculty position at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. He had his undergraduate medical education at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University and residency training at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria.

 

Professor Ogunniyi completed a World Health Organization (WHO)/Fogarty International/National Institute of Neurological, Communicative Disorders and Stroke fellowship in Neuroepidemiology at the NIH in 1987. Professsor Ogunniyi was involved in the first collaborative cross-cultural study of the epidemiology of dementia in elderly African Americans and Yoruba. He has also been involved in elucidating the risk factors for stroke in large, multi-site studies including WHO-STEPS, INTERSTROKE and more recently THRIVES which have resulted in data useful for planning preventive strategies against stroke and chronic cardiovascular diseases in low and low-middle income countries.

 

Professor Ogunniyi has served as a mentor to junior faculty members and budding scientists in neuroscience research. He was the Principal Investigator of a MEPI-linked award for improving neurologic outcome measurement for interventional research with focus on neuroimaging (R25NS080949). Capacity building was the main objective and eighteen faculty members benefited from this linkage with Northwestern University, Chicago, USA.

 

Professor Ogunniyi is the lead country investigator for a D43 grant investigating cognitive dysfunction in HIV patients and is a member of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Consortium in Nigeria. This has been instrumental in the revision and implementation of the undergraduate medical curriculum.
